Lead with the best version of yourself.

About the Team

Joe Byerly, Founder and Director

I’m passionate about leader development and want to help others to lead with the best version of themselves. I created this site to provide a platform for leaders to help each other by sharing lessons learned. Lessons that come from our own green notebooks.

I’m a combat arms officer with over 20 years of experience in combat and training environments and have served from the tactical to the strategic level. I have been fortunate to have mentors who encouraged me to read, write, and publish throughout my career. I’ve published articles in ARMY Magazine, Military Review, Strategy Bridge, Small Wars Journal, Task and Purpose, Foreign Policy, and many others. I’ve also been featured on Forbes, have been lucky enough to talk about leadership on several podcasts, and have spoken at the Annual AUSA Conference, the Future of War Conference, and Defense Entrepreneurs Forum Annual Conference.

Jack Hadley, Editor-in-Chief

I’m an Army Military Intelligence Officer currently serving in 5th Special Forces Group at Fort Campbell, KY, and a former infantry officer. I’m passionate about learning foreign languages, music, and backyard sports I take too seriously. I live in Nashville with my wife Jenna, a songwriter and composer.

Cara Edwards, Editor

I am currently serving as a Surface Warfare Officer in the U.S. Navy, and I feel like driving ships is in my blood. As the resident Navy editor, I bring with me a perspective from my service’s version of the green notebook. I am finishing my M.S. in Leadership and am passionate about making the military a better place, and all of us better leaders, through thoughtful reflection and the sharing of our experiences and lessons learned. In my free time you can usually find me painting, reading, or cooking.

Jake Pettit, Editor

I’m an Army Infantry Officer currently finishing the Maneuver Captain’s Career Course at Fort Moore, GA. I love reading, writing, running, and outdoor adventures with my wife Emily. We are ecstatic to be moving to Vicenza, Italy in just a few months.

Rebecca Segal, Editor

I grew up in Massachusetts, earned a neuroscience degree from Amherst College, and am now a Field Artillery officer. In my free time, I enjoy hanging out with my golden retriever, skiing, and of course, reading, writing, and editing.

Brian Gerardi, Contributor Engagement and Outreach

I’m a transitioning Field Artillery Officer currently teaching Officership at the United States Military Academy at West Point, NY. I love teaching, reading, writing, and running a small hobby farm with my wife (Tiffany, an Army Reserve Logistician), and sons Jackson and James. I am a terrible fisherman.

Katrina Faust, Podcast Editor

I am a media producer, video/audio editor, social media manager, and writer. I am also the editor of The LEADx Leadership Show Podcast. I recently started a small business on Etsy and in my free time, I stream games on Twitch, binge Netflix, and grow my online gaming community by making content on social media. I love to travel and one of my favorite hobbies is training my rescue dog to run agility courses.
